Public Lecture: "Media and Social Media in China"

Paul Mooney (P’12) will be on campus and speaking about his experiences as a journalist in Asia, including being based in Beijing since 1994.

Students with an interest in Asia, media in China, journalism (at various times, he has been on the staff of Newsweek, the Far Eastern Economic Review, and The South China Morning Post), etc. or simply hearing about contemporary China through the eyes of an experienced journalist will benefit from this presentation.

*Also, Thursday, he will be available to meet  with students,  at 4:15 in the cafĂ©, or can arrange individual appointments if they are interested.

Student Paper Competition

The Marianna McJimsey Award
2012 Student Paper Competition

The Board of Directors of ASIANetwork invites undergraduate students, currently or recently enrolled in ASIANetwork member schools, to submit papers of between 3,000 – 5,000 words for the 2012 Marianna McJimsey Award. The annual prize recognizes the best undergraduate student paper dealing with Asia. Topics may include any area of Asian Studies.

ASIANetwork will award a cash prize and provide lodging and meals for the award recipient to attend the 2012 Annual Meeting of ASIANetwork in Portland, Oregon to receive the award in person. The award recipient will be announced on the ASIANetwork website in January 2012. The winning paper will appear in the spring 2012 edition of the peer-reviewed journal ASIANetwork Exchange: A Journal for Asian Studies in the Liberal Arts.

The award honors the outstanding service of Marianna McJimsey, the first Executive Director of ASIANetwork and the first editor of the ASIANetwork Exchange.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students and recent graduates with a graduation date of 2011 or later from colleges and universities with current membership in ASIANetwork.

Field: South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, or Asia in Diaspora.

Format of papers: Papers should include two separate attachments: 1) a cover page giving the title of the paper, the student's name, the name of the faculty advisor(s), institution, and contact information (mailing address and e-mail); 2) the paper itself with no identifying information other than the title included on the individual pages. Failure to meet these conditions will render the submission ineligible for consideration.

Submission of papers: A student may submit only one entry. Papers may be submitted by the student author or by a faculty member acting on behalf of a student. A faculty member may not provide any evaluative comments at the time of nomination.
