SASS Lecture: Pakistan Army Operations in Swat

The South Asia Speaker Series presents:

"Pakistan Army Operations in Swat in the Aftermath of Insurgency and Floods"

Jawad Khan
University of Northern Virginia

When: September 16, 2011 @ 11:15am
Where: Geneva Room, Library

In 2009 the Pakistan Army carried out a major counter-insurgency operation--Operation Toar Tander--in Swat District against the Pakistani Taliban.  Widely acknowledged, even by Pakistan’s critics, as militarily effective in pushing out the Taliban, the counter-insurgency operation was just one part of a broader civil-military effort to regain the area from the Pakistani Taliban.  Jawad will speak about both the Pakistan Army’s counter-insurgency campaign and the civil administrations attempts to rebuild an area devastated by Taliban rule, heavy fighting and the horrendous floods of 2010.

If you are interested in what is going on in Northern Pakistan, FATA and the Pakistan Army’s counter-insurgency operations policy, and wonder if the ‘experts’ you saw on TV actually knew what they were talking about, this talk is for you!  Currently a doctoral candidate at the U. of Northern Virginia, Jawad Khan is a former Pakistan Army officer with extensive service in the area, a Masters in War Studies from Kings College London and a graduate of the British Ministry of Defense’s Joint Services Command and Staff College.
